Two Brothers Arrested in France Over Alleged Antisemitic Terror Plot

French anti-terror authorities have detained two brothers suspected of planning a violent attack targeting Jewish communities in the country.

According to prosecutors, the suspects — aged 20 and 22 — were stopped by police last week while travelling in a vehicle in northern France. Officials say the brothers hold both Moroccan and Italian citizenship.

Weapons and Materials Discovered

During the arrest, investigators reportedly discovered a loaded semi-automatic firearm inside the vehicle. Authorities also found a bottle containing hydrochloric acid along with a flag linked to the Islamic State militant group.

These discoveries prompted anti-terror prosecutors to open a formal investigation into what they describe as a potential “lethal and antisemitic” attack.

Radicalisation Investigation

Officials say the brothers moved to France with their family in 2017 after previously living in Italy.

Investigators reviewing digital devices and speaking with relatives believe the two men had become increasingly radicalised over the past two years. Authorities also say their extremist views appeared to intensify in the days leading up to their arrest.

Prosecutors claim the suspects had considered travelling abroad to join militant activities in regions such as Syria or Palestinian territories but were unable to do so.

Instead, investigators believe they began planning an attack within France.

Security Concerns Amid Global Tensions

The arrests come at a time when many countries have increased security around Jewish institutions following rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Authorities across Europe and North America have reported several incidents targeting Jewish sites in recent days.

Recent Attacks on Jewish Sites

Earlier this week, explosions and suspected arson attacks were reported at Jewish institutions in several European cities.

In the Netherlands, a Jewish school in Amsterdam was damaged by an explosion, while a synagogue in Rotterdam was targeted in a suspected arson incident.

Belgium also reported damage to a synagogue building in the city of Liège after an explosion.

In the United States, a separate incident occurred in Michigan where a man drove a vehicle filled with fireworks and fuel into a synagogue building. Police later confirmed that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigation Ongoing

French authorities have not released further details about the exact target or timing of the suspected plot.

However, prosecutors say the investigation is continuing as officials examine evidence gathered from the suspects and their digital communications.

Security agencies across Europe remain on high alert as tensions in the Middle East continue to raise concerns about possible retaliatory attacks abroad.
